Ma Vie de Loup (Selvagem / Wild Thing)

The synopsys: A young guard dog, raised by sheep, finds himself in the midst of an identity crisis. A chance encounter with a pack of displaced wolves sets off a chain of events that sends him on a journey of self-discovery.

Told from the animals’ perspective and featuring a livestock guardian dog as the protagonist, Wild Thing is an adventure story for all ages, rooted in the age-old conflict between instinct and domestication.

Ma Vie de Loup, my first long comics story, was written originally in English between 2015 and 2017, while I lived in London. It was published next year in France, by Éditions Sarbacane, and was released in Brazil and the USA in the following years.

I was inspired by readings on psychology and contemporary philosophy, and have been gathering notes and fragments of ideas in my sketchbooks over some years. It came out as an adventure story in the likes of Carl Barks, and although I imagined it would be more suitable to young adults, it found a good readership with 10 year old kids both in France and in Brazil.

“Wild Thing is a fascinating adventure, a road movie for dogs, brimming with life, depth, passion and setbacks. The plot, the relationships and the connections between the characters form an intelligent chain of events leading up to the final resolution.

Clayton masters dialogue, glances, movements and timing like few others. This distinctive style of storytelling is what gives Wild Thing its relevance, power and uniqueness.”
